Interviewer: Did your family have stories like that that they told?
Woman: Well I, uh, I really don’t remember, I remember one story that uh, this man, this young man and this girl were in love, so in love, and she was the only daughter on the farm. But the parents didn’t like the young man. And they had, the, they use, they couldn’t see each other, these two kids couldn’t see each other so they used to leave notes in one tree. They had dug a hole in the tree and they used to leave notes there. And they decided to elope, go away. And so one Sunday, they went to church. But they never let her go without either the father or the mother. So this Sunday she went to church with her mother. When, in the middle of the service, going to communion, she let her mother go ahead to communion, and instead of starting to go, she turned back and got out of the church and he was waiting with her, for her, with two horses.
Interviewer: (whispers) Oh…
Woman: And it wasn’t uh, it’s just a short way to the frontier you know.
Interviewer: My goodness
Woman: Mhmm. Isn’t that uh, thrilling? (laughs)
Interviewer: Yes it is. They really made it then?
Woman: They really made it.

Two Horses

Don’t look back
It’s a bad habit
We can do whatever we want
I know I don’t know anything
But I could find my way to you in the dark
Close your eyes
We talk in circles
Right back where we started from
I know I don’t know anything
But I could find my way to you in the dark

Crawled in your bed, curled up like a question
Looking for answers in the wrong places
Talk so slowly, quiet when you’re calling
Going backwards, got me where you want
I’ll see you when I see you
I’ll see you on the other side
In your good graces I’m always the bad guy
Learning the hard way but I’m doing just fine
Got a feeling, don’t know what to call it
Not afraid of heights, afraid of falling
Talked about forever like we could touch it
All is fair keep your hands above the table
Move too fast now, I could never hate you
Come undone when we both knew the end
I’ll see you when I see you
I’ll see you on the other side

Magic Trick

We spent our Sundays walking under ladders
Swaying back and forth keeping time
Drowning in the sand that was falling all around us
Laughing and just saying we’re fine
Yeah time’s a funny thing it just slips through your fingers
Like a rope you cling to for dear life
And I don’t know a lot but I know a few things and I know
We don’t get out alive
I broke a mirror the year that I turned 20
Or at least, I thought that I did
Now every step I take is just a crack in the concrete
And I don’t know what I’m doing
Your kiss is just a card trick but I’m still dying
to see what you’ve got up your sleeve
I know it’s not a heart but I’m hoping I’m hoping
It’s something that still wants me
